in)(between record vol. 43 (exposition groupée) fait partie de la soirée habituelle "Japanese) (Night - Book night" organisée chaque novembre pendant le week-end de Paris Photo.

Pour la septième édition de Japanese)(Night ont été invités 4 artistes de la galerie à exposer et à présenter leurs dernières publications.

in)(between record vol.43 (group show) is part of our long-established "Japanese)(Night – Books Night organized every November during the Paris Photo weekend.

For the seventh edition of Japanese) (Night we invited 4 of our gallery artists to exhibit and present their latest publications.



KOJI ONAKA - FARAWAY BOAT
For his fourth exhibition at in)(between Koji and Luigi selected photographs from forgotten negatives. The complete selection became his latest publication “FARAWAY BOAT”, probably the last book with BOAT in the title.

This exhibition and publication commemorate a turning point on his personal life and his life as a photographer. At 59, 43 years since his first darkroom, 28 years after publishing his first book Seitaka-awadachiso on October 1991, for sure it has not been a short trip, with the same camera on hand, drifting as slow twin boats from one seaside town to another umimachi… with the moves of a lucky cat riding on horses while photographing cactuses, dragonflies, and bottles of beers in colourful faraway lands from his native Nogata and that Shinjuku in the 80s a colourful part of his beloved candy box, it has been a trip of 30 published books and numerous zines.

Koji says - I hope that through time these selected photographs once forgotten in time will reach as far away as possible, as I deem that they are photographs of drifting times as a ship that drifts Faraway in the flow of time.

KOJI ONAKA - FARAWAY BOAT
Pour sa quatrième exposition à in)(inbetween Koji et Luigi ont choisi des photographies à partir de négatifs oubliés. Cette sélection se retrouve dans sa dernière publication "FARAWAY BOAT", probablement le dernier livre avec BOAT dans le titre.

Cette exposition et publication commémorent à 59 ans un tournant dans sa vie personnelle et sa vie de photographe. 43 ans depuis sa première chambre noire, 28 ans après la publication de son premier livre Seitaka-awadachiso en octobre 1991, à coup sûr, ça n'a pas été un court voyage, avec toujours la même caméra à portée de main, dérivant comme de lent twinboat d'une ville côtière (umimachi) à une autre... Avec les gesticulations d'un chat porte bonheur hissé sur un cheval, photographiant cactus, libellules, et autres bouteilles de bière dans les lointaines terres colorées de son Nogata natale. Des années 80 à Shinjuku, à sa boîte de bonbons adorée, ce fut un voyage de 30 livres publiés ainsi que de nombreux zines.

Koji dit : “J'espère qu'au fil du temps, ces photographies sélectionnées, autrefois oubliées, iront le plus loin possible, car je considère qu’elles traversent le temps tel un navire qui dérive dans l’infini.”

CHRIS SHAW - GOLDEN BITCH
For his second exhibition at in)(between Chris shows a selection of colour photographs from his Golden Beach series 85/87 at Paros, Cyclades Greece. Photographs taken when he lived at the beach. With this exhibition we will launch his latest publication - GOLDEN BITCH - Softcover, Color and B & W, published by Chris Shaw Prints and in)(between gallery Paris France.

June 1985, after traveling to Athens without any premeditated destination besides going farther, he accidentally arrived to Paros and heard about a beach an hour from the ferry port by bus a place called golden beach or christiakti. - I stepped off the bus … the dust cleared… there was a winding path to an endless beach… there seemed to be windbreakers made of reeds and people living there, a cafe and a small guest house… people were naked…I heard the word MALAKA. there was the Iliad and my personal odyssey amongst retsina, ouzo and metaxa cyclades. I sold my return flight ticket I lived on the beach for six weeks then hitchhiked home across Europe….

CHRIS SHAW - GOLDEN BITCH
Pour sa seconde exposition à in)(between Chris montre une sélection de photographies en couleur de sa série “Golden Beach 85/87 à Paros, Cyclades, Grèce”. Photographies prises lorsqu'il vécut sur la plage. Avec cette exposition, nous lancerons sa nouvelle publication - GOLDEN BITCH - Couverture souple, couleur et noir et blanc, publiée par Christopher Shaw et in)(between Nov. 2019.

Juin 1985, après avoir voyagé vers Athènes, sans aucune destination en tête si ce n’est d'aller au plus loin. Il est accidentellement arrivé dans l’île de Paros et a entendu parler d'une plage située à une heure de bus du port, un endroit appelé côte d’or ou Christi Akti. “Je suis descendu du bus... la poussière s'est dissipée... il y avait un chemin sinueux vers une plage sans fin... il semblait y avoir des coupe-vents faits de roseaux et de gens qui y vivaient, un café et une petite maison d'hôtes... les gens étaient nus... J'ai entendu le mot MALAKA. Ce fut mon Iliade et mon Odyssée personnelles entre les retsina, ouzo et autre metaxa. J'ai vendu mon billet d'avion retour, j'ai vécu sur la plage pendant six semaines, puis je suis rentré chez moi en auto-stop en traversant l'Europe …”

GILLES ROUDIERE – TROVA
For his fourth time at in)(between, Gilles brings TROVA, a series photographed in Cuba.

"Gilles Roudière belongs to the family of intuitive and sensitive photography, he does not tell the world as it is, but as he senses it.

Hence, in the images of Cuba that he offers us, there is neither testimonial, nor documentary intent.

Nothing is descriptive. No hints, no geographical or social studies as it is not his purpose.

GILLES ROUDIERE – TROVA
Pour sa quatrième fois à in)(between , Gilles présente TROVA, une série photographiée à Cuba.

"Gilles Roudière appartient à cette famille de la photographie intuitive et sensible, il ne dit pas le monde tel qu'il est, mais tel qu'il le ressent.

Aussi dans les images de Cuba qu'il livre, il n'y a ni intention de témoignage, ni intention documentaire.

Rien n'est descriptif. Aucun indice, aucune étude géographique ou sociale. Là n'est pas son dessein. - Caroline Benichou"
MORTEN ANDERSEN - FAST CITY
For his fourth time at in)(between we will show an excerpt from his last exhibition with us last September, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Morten's first book "FAST CITY" (Self-published November 1999) and the launch of the second edition in Paris (published by Forlaget Fotografi May 2019)

FAST CITY has become a benchmark on photography, it was one of the first books to include colour photographs with black and white ones – that is something that after 20 years of its first edition photographers still try to implement in their books. This book is more than what is known as American City-Noir and Japanese contrasted night street photography and Morten’s style of photography keeps influencing photographers from all over.

MORTEN ANDERSEN - FAST CITY
Pour sa quatrième fois à in)(between nous allons montrer un extrait de sa dernière exposition avec nous en septembre dernier, pour commémorer le 20e anniversaire du premier livre de Morten "FAST CITY" (Auto-publié novembre 1999) et le lancement de la deuxième édition à Paris (publié par Forlaget Fotografi May 2019)

FAST CITY est devenu une référence en matière de photographie. Il a été l’un des premiers livres à inclure à la fois des photographies couleur et noir et blanc. Depuis son édition il y a près de 20 ans, “FAST CITY” inspire les photographes qui veulent tenter d’adopter ce mélange. Ce livre est plus que les courants nommés “American City-Noir” et la “photographie de rue de nuit” Japonaise. Le style de photographie de Morten Andersen continue d’influencer les photographes du monde entier.
